The Ultimate CSLB Licensing Checklist: From Bond to Insurance

Getting your California contractor’s license (CSLB) can feel like a full-time job in itself. Between the exams, the background checks, and the endless paperwork, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

But here’s the truth: most delays in the licensing process aren’t caused by the exam—they’re caused by missing or incorrect documentation regarding bonds and insurance.

If you’re ready to get your business legal and active in 2026, here is the definitive, step-by-step checklist to ensure you cross the finish line without the headaches.

1. Verify Your Experience and Education

Before you even touch a CSLB application, ensure you have your four years of journey-level experience documented. Whether it’s through a former employer or a certifier, this is the foundation.

  • Pro Tip: If you have military experience or a college degree in construction management, you might be able to credit that toward your four years!

2. Pass the Examination

Once the CSLB accepts your application, you’ll be scheduled for your Law & Business and Trade exams.

  • Study hard: The Law & Business portion catches many contractors off guard because it covers contracts, bookkeeping, and safety regulations you might not deal with every day on the jobsite.

3. Secure Your Contractor License Bond ($25,000)

This is where many contractors get stuck. To have an active license in California, you must file a Contractor’s Bond in the amount of $25,000.

This isn’t insurance for you—it’s a guarantee for the public and your employees that you will follow CSLB rules. The good news? You don’t pay $25,000; you pay a small annual premium based on your credit score and experience.

4. General Liability Insurance (The Shield)

While the CSLB doesn’t technically require General Liability (GL) for all sole proprietors, you shouldn’t work a single day without it.

In California, most GCs and property owners won’t even let you set foot on a jobsite without a Certificate of Insurance (COI). If you are an LLC, General Liability is actually a legal requirement for your license.

5. Workers’ Compensation Insurance

If you have even one employee (full-time, part-time, or even temporary), California law requires you to have Workers’ Comp.

Wait, what if I don’t have employees?

Even if you are a one-man show, you must file a Workers’ Comp Exemption with the CSLB. However, if you have a C-8, C-20, C-22, C-39, or C-61/D-40 license, you are required to carry Workers’ Comp regardless of whether you have employees.

6. Live Scan Fingerprinting

Every person listed on the license must undergo a criminal background check via Live Scan. Do this as soon as the CSLB sends you the instructions to avoid a bottleneck at the end of the process.

7. The Final Filing (Assembling the Package)

Once you have your bond, your insurance certs, and your exam results, it’s time to finalize.

  • Check the signatures: Missing one signature can set you back 3-4 weeks.
  • Pay the fees: Ensure your initial license fee is paid in full.
